TeV Gamma Ray Astronomy

چکیده

The field of ground-based gamma ray astronomy has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years. As an increasing number of sources are detected at TeV energies, the field has matured and become a viable branch of modern astronomy. Lying at the uppermost end of the electromagnetic rainbow, TeV photons are always preciously few in number but carry essential information about the particle acceleration and radiative processes involved in extreme astronomical settings. Together with observations at longer wavelengths, TeV gammaray observations have drastically improved our view of the universe. In this review, we briefly describe recent progress in the field. We will conclude by providing a personal perspective on the future of the field, in particular, on the significant roles that China could play to advance this young but exciting field.

Revealing the Dark Tev Sky: the Atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging Technique for Very High Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

One of the last frontiers of the gamma-ray sky is that characterized by the distribution of TeV photons. These photons can be detected relatively easily with ground-based detectors (constituting a TeV “window” in the atmosphere); thus the detection of TeV gamma-ray sources did not have to await the availability of space platforms. In practice although the technology was available at an early da...

Gamma Ray Astronomy: Implications for Fundamental Physics

Gamma Ray Astronomy studies cosmic accelerators through their electromagnetic radiation in the energy range between ∼100 MeV and ∼100 TeV. The present most sensitive observations in this energy band are performed, from space, by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite and, from Earth, by the Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes MAGIC, H.E.S.S. and VERITAS. These instruments have revolu...

New Results from High Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy

High energy gamma-ray astronomy has recently made significant progresss through ground-based instruments like the H.E.S.S. array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The unprecedented angular resolution and the large field of view has allowed to spatially resolve for the first time the morphology of gamma-ray sources in the TeV energy range. The experimental technique is described and t...
